Sunday's Gratitude: Happy Easter!

Happy Easter to all our readers!

Whether you celebrate Easter as the resurrection day of Jesus, or in the secular tradition of eggs and bunnies, or not at all, Easter still symbolizes the coming of SPRING for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.

Here on the blog it's an EGGcellent (<-- sorry, I just felt I had to) excuse to make Wiley wear bunny ears as we celebrate all God's creatures, great and small.

Since I have connections, I am able to share some AVAILABLE bunnies and other little critters. These animals are all at the Hillside SPCA in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.  Clicking on any of their pictures will take you to the Hillside's website.

Meet Juliette

Look at Stormy's hair!

This is Carmine.

This is McKinley.

This is Wizard.

Chuck, a deaf guinea pig.

Magic the bunny.

As I said above, these animals are all currently available.  Unfortunately there will likely be more all too soon, as it is very popular to buy small pets around this time of year, rabbits being the obvious choice. Many people do not realize the time commitment and level of care required for these animals, and wind up dumping them at a shelter. Special thanks to Sarah, who volunteers at Hillside SPCA and is also Lilith's mom, for sharing these pictures with the blog.

Now, I have two more pictures to share. The first one is Wiley sitting up while wearing his bunny ears, and it is just too cute.  It's hard to tell he's sitting up because I wasn't prepared to take the picture and didn't have it framed right. Sorry.

The next picture. . .well. . .brace yourselves.  You might want to even cover your eyes.  Wiley really misunderstood what I meant when I told him to pose like a bunny. He went right for the centerfold pose!  He's so immodest.

Shame on him.

Thanks for making time for us! Hope you are having/have had a lovely weekend. Happy Easter. Now get out there and take some pictures of your pets outside for the Great Outdoors Photo Share!

Feel-Good Friday: Bichon Bunnies

Cujoe Cottontail

It's Feel-Good Friday. On Fridays we like to share uplifting posts and/or real-life stories beyond our usual rescue pieces.  For Christians, it's also Good Friday.  I contemplated making a pun with Feel Good Friday, but I was afraid people might be offended given the solemn nature of this day in the Christian tradition.  Anywaaayyyyyyyy, the Rescue Dog Blog operates best in the world of light-hearted journalism, so I'm sharing these pictures of Cujoe and Gracie in bunny ears!

Br'er Gracie

Cujoe and Gracie are my parents' rescue dogs. Cujoe is a Bichon Frise and Gracie is a Havachon. Gracie, pictured directly above, was not particularly cooperative. Below, she is more interested in kissing Olivia.

Cujoe was compliant but very unamused when I first put them on.

Once I pulled him away from his comfy spot on the chair next to my dad and thrust him into the spotlight he seemed more resigned to the process.

Gracie complied for one more decent picture before the ears were pawed off.

Cujoe gave us one more too.

After that I just didn't have the heart to torment them anymore. My parents dress them in costumes for every holiday. They have seasonal sweaters with turkeys and bunnies and who knows what else? But the ears. . . well that was just more than they signed on for, so I wrapped up the photo shoot. I did, however, still have one very willing model:

Enjoy the upcoming weekend but don't forget about your homework for the Great Outdoors Photo Share

Sleeping Pets Photo Share: Part Three

Mini and Gracie asleep by the fire

Indy is racked out.

Not too long after we started the Rescue Dog Blog Wiley and I decided we wanted a way for everyone to be able to share with us, even if they didn't have a rescue pet.

Obviously we have one goal here: convince people to give rescuing a try when they are ready for a new pet. However, I assume everyone reading the blog is an animal lover or they wouldn't be here.

Ace is taking a rest.

All are welcomed here, and if they have a pet they love so much they want to share it, then why not find a way to let them do so?  That's what our Photo Shares are all about. Any picture of a legal, ethical pet will be shared if it fits the topic, even if it is not a rescue, and our topic lately has been SLEEPING.

Lilith's mom caught her sleeping, which is really tough to do with a rabbit.

Isis and Ares are spooning.
Winter makes many of us want to hibernate, especially here in the Northeast, so why not celebrate sleepiness and share pictures of our pets from the time they are at their most innocent?

Logan is asleep on his daddy's boot

Today and tomorrow we will share the last of our sleeping pet pictures, and then we will begin our next adventure, which we will explain next Wednesday.

Luke and Leroy during their naptime

Chaucer and Molly are best friends.
As a reminder, the blog is built around your rescue stories too.

So please, if you've been reading for awhile but you haven't shared your rescue(s), put some pictures together and a little back-story and send it to me

I will write everything up and make you and your pets sound awesome! Don't forgot to check us out on social media:

What did you miss? 1/13-1/18

We had a fun week at the Rescue Dog Blog. Sunday was a little serious, as I told you about Wiley's health problem. However, we battled the Monday blues with an adorable puppy named Lilly. Then we had a furry friend of Wiley's, Lilith. She's a rescue bunny, and we love rescues of any species so we are glad her mom shared.  On Wednesday, I told you about Wiley's true crime and the consequences. This brought us to our second promotion, Animals Behaving Badly. The only way this works is if YOU SHARE!  Remember, they don't have to be rescue pets. We ended the week with an uplifting story about a veteran who started a program to unite shelter dogs with PTSD sufferers, which is a win-win for everyone, or as Michael Scott would say, "It's a win-win-win." The vets get help and hope, the animals get a furever home, and our faith gets restored in humanity.

This week we will have a dog and a cat to share, and after that I am waiting on your stories. I also have a fun post about poor Wiley's bath-time.  Please take some time to find some pictures to share! In the meantime, I'll leave you with this image of an animal behaving very very badly.

A bunny's identity crisis

Today's entry is unconventional. It's a bunny!!!!  A really cute bunny.

Now, her family is having a tough time agreeing on her name. Sarah, the one who brought her home from the shelter, wants it to be Lilith, after the chilly Cheers character. Her family, fans of Eddie Murphy's stand-up comedy, insists it should be Lillian, after Eddie's mother.

Sarah met Lilithian (<--I'm trying it out) when she was working at the Hillside SPCA, which is also where Wiley, Rosco, Cujoe, and Rustle came from.  Lilith was building a nest in her cage, even though she didn't have any babies. In fact one of the shelter workers suspects she was "false nesting."

Anyway, obviously Cleopatra (<--- my mom had a bunny with this name when she was a kid) is adorable, and she did get adopted, but was returned for being too "aggressive."  So Sarah went back to cleaning her cage every weekend at the shelter, and not surprisingly, she got attached.

Now Lilith is living large, eating parsley 'til her heart's content and living in a veritable mansion.

Sarah says parsley, kale, and special pretzel-like bunny treats are her favorites.

I know we are all very grateful for the workers in various shelters. I don't know where they find the serenity to work there, and it should come as no surprise that many animals wind up joining their families. I don't imagine Lilith/Lillian/Lilithian/Cleo cares what she is called, as long as she gets her kale and her belly rubs!

Do any of you have rabbits as pets? Have you ever encountered the "false nesting?" Let us hear about it, and share some cute bunny pictures too!

Happy Links!

It's time to put 2012 in the books. Wiley is always up for a celebration, but first he wants us to think about some of the enjoyable moments from this year.

2012 has had some truly somber moments, and we have many to remember in our prayers. For the moment, however, let's focus on our blessings.  These are some of the best images of 2012.

Check out this link to see the 40 cutest dog gifs of the year, according to Buzzfeed.   By the way, a gif is a moving picture. So you get to see this dog, but in motion!  Do it-you won't be able to stop smiling.

This site is called Attack of the Cute.  The link takes you to their daily competition of cute photos, like the one here. You click on your favorite, and they keep cycling through to see if they can top it.

The title of this piece is "Can You Make It Through This Post Without Squealing?"  With images like this one the answer is going to be no.

Please be safe if you're traveling for the holiday. Tomorrow we will share how Wiley celebrated the New Year, and this week we have an awesome rescue story about Petey!  Please make time to share your story too!

Meagan's house

Today I’m sharing a house full of rescue love. Meagan has submitted these pictures of her assorted rescue animals.   Not only does her family have three rescue dogs, they also have a rescue bunny! BUT WAIT: THERE’S MORE!  This house also has four more bunnies, one other dog, and a bird.

Sandy is the oldest in the fur-mily at age 14. She came from a shelter in Cherry Point, North Carolina that found her when she was just 4 weeks old. She joined Meagan’s family at 5 ½ weeks.

Choopi the Chihuahua, age 4, needed a new home when his previous owners didn’t want him anymore.  Luckily for Choopi, Meagan’s family was ready and willing.

Ace is the youngest of the canines at 11 months.  Ace, like Choopi, was in need of a new home when his old family couldn’t take care of him anymore. Once again, Meagan’s family stepped in.

And finally, this is Chunk. Poor Chunk was found in the woods with a large chunk of her fur missing.  She wound up with the Helping Hands Animal Center, and Meagan’s family took her home.

This household is a ringing endorsement for saving a rescue pet.   Time and again they opened their doors when these animals had no other place to go. Thank you so much, Meagan, for sharing your home with these animals, and your story with us.

What is your rescue story? Not all rescues comes from shelters. How did your animal find its way into your home and your heart?
