BARK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN

****Ok, I have big cool Wiley news at the bottom of this post, but take your time and enjoy the whole page first.

Well? What do you think?  Go ahead. Take a minute to absorb it all.

The regal stature.

The powerful demeanor.

Admit it- you're seeing my pets in a whole new light.  A whole new SUPERCUTE**** light.  Readers. . . I know there are lots of cute sibling pet costume combos out there.

How many are both cute and a sophisticated nod to millenia of history and mythology?

Ok ok I'll calm down and stop tooting my own horn. Seriously though I have been working on this for weeks. I told my students to look for the pictures on the blog in a few days because I was so excited about them, and one young man said I should call Jenny "Catopatra."  I said I was leaning towards "Cleocatra," but thanks, Billy, for the suggestion.

Jenny does NOT take kindly to anything put on her head, so getting the head shots of her were exhausting. I knew getting the two animals together, while in costume, would be impossible.

I did manage to bribe Jenny to get closer to Wiley by putting a few pieces of food near him. Turns out she'll  brave quite a bit when food's being offered.

But check out how far away she gets each time, between bribes. When I saw her literally lean as far away from him as possible, as pictured in a few shots below, I could not stop laughing.

She's also sticking her tongue out in the top left picture. She's probably licking her lips but it's more fun to think she's expressing herself.

You can tell by Wiley's face that she's staring him right into submission. haha

While I was snapping shots, I told Wiley he had to pose like the Sphinx. He said "Like this mom?"

I told him he had to play it a little more cool.

Perfect!

Thanks for stopping by to check on my beautiful Isis and Osiris. And thanks to the Egyptians for being so devoted to domesticated animals, most famously cats but dogs mattered to them too.

Strange to think how long these creatures have been so closely intertwined with us.  Happy Halloween everyone, and don't forget to get lots of pictures of your pets in costume, or somehow enjoying Halloween. Send them to me at pabibliophile@gmail.com and be sure to scroll down to see my big cool Wiley news!

****Ok, so here's the big news. I have featured Buzzfeed Animals a number of times on this blog. Their posts are always entertaining and the pictures that go with them are sublime.

Well. . .  WILEY HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR THEIR "CUTE OR NOT" page!!!!!!!!!! This is literally something I have hoped for since I started the blog back in December. Will you please, pretty please, go to this link: http://www.buzzfeed.com/cuteornot?id=2709876 and vote for this picture of Wiley?

I'm not too confident that we can beat pictures of adorable baby bunnies and snuggly puppies but I am excited just to see our boy on a page I frequent so regularly.  Thank you so much!

Akira and Meko: family bonding

Yesterday's post about Coco, from Hong Kong, reminded me that I still hadn't shared the family pictures of Akira and Meko!  Their mom Jenna has done a stellar job taking pictures of them together, and it's about time I shared them, don't you think?

Jenna brought these two into her life when many others may have passed on them. If you haven't read their stories yet you really need to!

Now, not only do they have Jenna to take care of them, but they also have each other!

Jenna indulges these sweeties whenever she can, like giving them their own special coats!

And they pay her back with unconditional love and good behavior in public.

They make the most of their lives with Jenna, including rainy day naps as pictured below.  I love Meko's position! BOL. (Bark out loud.)

As we have commented in the past, most people who rescue will tell you the animals are grateful. They know. I don't know how they know but they do. They know who gave them a second (or third or fourth) chance, and they will always pay their owners back a million times over. Jenna and her girls are great ambassadors for rescue, and we thank Jenna for sharing their stories. Let's hope she keeps the pictures coming and we can get some updates from time to time!

I also want to add:  Happy Birthday to the woman who taught me everything I know about how to treat animals! Love ya Mom.

Have you submitted your pictures yet for the Photo Share? No?  WHY NOT?  Get out there and get a picture of your pet with something in its mouth. Email me at pabibliophile@gmail.com.

Holly's Happy House

How much cuteness do you think you can stand?  How about happiness?  Because you've already met Davey and Mini, but they have a sister I haven't shared yet. . . Gracie.  She's the schnoodle on the left up there.

When Davey and Mini first came to live with Holly, Holly's family had a beautiful and beloved cocker spaniel named Maui.

Maui, Davey, and Mini got along great and were adored by the whole family. Here they are pictured with Macy.

Unfortunately, poor Maui went to the Rainbow Bridge at the young age of 7, due to cancer. After they said goodbye to Maui they decided to hold off on getting another dog because Holly's husband had learned of a possible job relocation in Canada, and they didn't want to complicate things even further with another dog. Besides, they also had two cats, and Davey and Mini seemed to be getting along just swell.

If you're a regular reader of the blog, you know I believe some animals are destined to be part of our lives. God sends them along at just the right time and the next thing you know. . . they're family.  That's what happened with Gracie.

Gracie found herself homeless after ten years of living with the same family. Her owner married someone who was allergic, and Gracie got passed around through the family until she wound up being surrendered to Holly's friend, who fostered dogs. Holly was watching Gracie for a bit when her friend went out of town and she noticed how well Gracie was getting along with the other pets.

She said Gracie had an "old soul" that reminded her very much of Maui. She had similar mannerisms and habits, such as howling if Holly left the house for a walk and didn't take her along.

Both pups have Canadian snow faces here!

Although Holly continued to look for other homes for Gracie, nothing really panned out. When her friend came back to town she found herself putting off returning Gracie. One day her husband said "She's not going back is she?" and Gracie became a part of the family.

Let's remember the family includes cats too!

Now, think back to the reason I mentioned earlier for Holly delaying getting a third dog when Maui passed away.  Remember the potential move to Canada?  Well that became a reality, and Holly had to tell their Canadian realtor that she needed a rental unit that would accept three dogs and two cats!  I bet that realtor loved Holly and her family. Anyway, in June of 2012 they packed up all five pets and moved to Canada.  Oh yeah, they decided to take along their daughter Macy too. haha

Now they're adjusting to those cold long Canadian winters.

Holly said the whole pack couldn't wait to sunbathe as the winter receded and the sun appeared!

Someday I hope to be able to do everything for rescue animals that Holly has done. Her family (human and furry) is beautiful and they all enrich each others' lives.    Holly writes a blog about her transition from Kansas to Canada, among other things. I encourage you to check it out. This post addresses the importance of rescuing instead of buying.

Many thanks to Holly for sharing her stories and pets with us. We hope to continue to get updates and we wish Holly and her family all the best!

Please consider sharing your rescue story, and don't forget all pets are eligible for the Great Outdoors Photo Share.

Sunday's Gratitude: Happy Easter!

Happy Easter to all our readers!

Whether you celebrate Easter as the resurrection day of Jesus, or in the secular tradition of eggs and bunnies, or not at all, Easter still symbolizes the coming of SPRING for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.

Here on the blog it's an EGGcellent (<-- sorry, I just felt I had to) excuse to make Wiley wear bunny ears as we celebrate all God's creatures, great and small.

Since I have connections, I am able to share some AVAILABLE bunnies and other little critters. These animals are all at the Hillside SPCA in Pottsville, Pennsylvania.  Clicking on any of their pictures will take you to the Hillside's website.

Meet Juliette

Look at Stormy's hair!

This is Carmine.

This is McKinley.

Godly the guinea pig

Mr. Bunny

Polly Gee, Kester, and Mr. Funk

This is Wizard.

Chuck, a deaf guinea pig.

Magic the bunny.

As I said above, these animals are all currently available.  Unfortunately there will likely be more all too soon, as it is very popular to buy small pets around this time of year, rabbits being the obvious choice. Many people do not realize the time commitment and level of care required for these animals, and wind up dumping them at a shelter. Special thanks to Sarah, who volunteers at Hillside SPCA and is also Lilith's mom, for sharing these pictures with the blog.

Now, I have two more pictures to share. The first one is Wiley sitting up while wearing his bunny ears, and it is just too cute.  It's hard to tell he's sitting up because I wasn't prepared to take the picture and didn't have it framed right. Sorry.

The next picture. . .well. . .brace yourselves.  You might want to even cover your eyes.  Wiley really misunderstood what I meant when I told him to pose like a bunny. He went right for the centerfold pose!  He's so immodest.

Shame on him.

Thanks for making time for us! Hope you are having/have had a lovely weekend. Happy Easter. Now get out there and take some pictures of your pets outside for the Great Outdoors Photo Share!
