Bertie the Diplomatic Dog

A few weeks ago Wendy contacted me and asked me to share Bertie. Isn't he stunning?

Bertie had just crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and Wendy wanted to share all his wonderful attributes.

She and her family adopted this Jack Russell mix from an RSPCA in the United Kingdom, and all of Bertie's pictures featured here were taken in Scotland.

Bertie had quite the life!  He loved playing on the beach, even though he was afraid of the ocean.

He loved adventures and went with Wendy and her family on long mountain hikes and trails.

He even enjoyed the snow, and it's a good thing he did because look at all this snow!

Bertie was both "mischievous" and "very affectionate," to quote Wendy.  What a wonderful combination in a pet.

Wendy chronicled some of Bertie's life in a blog called Diplomatic Dog.  You definitely need to check it out. Her photography is phenomenal and her subject is a doggie supermodel if ever there was one.  All of the pictures above link back to her blog; all you have to do is click on any image.

Bertie enjoyed life to the fullest, and he passed away quietly and without pain when his heart just stopped beating. Wendy's heart is too big to ignore other dogs in need of homes, and so although she knows there is no replacement for Bertie, she has found another dog in need. You can read about it on her blog.

Wendy thank you so much for sharing your story with us and for sharing Bertie with the world. We hope you will keep us up to date as your household grows via another furbaby, and our thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn Bertie's loss.  Still, just look at the beautiful life you gave him!

Action Jackson

I am an Aussie Addict. I love Australian Shepherds. They are brilliant, hyper, stubborn, clever, and like many breeds, each has his own personality. Aussies come in multiple sizes and colors, but they have one driving need: to work.

The breed name is something of a misnomer; they are not from Australia but rather were used to herd sheep that were loosely associated with Australia. Their build and coat was designed to help them weather cold western winters, like those found in Colorado.

Jackson, the Aussie I'm sharing today, makes the most of his environment. In fact he's probably in heaven with the climate out there.

I met Jackson through Instagram, so you can follow him there if you'd like.

He's not a rescue, but I wanted to share these amazing pictures anyway as part of the Great Outdoors Photo Share. Besides, Aussies frequently wind up in shelters because of their super high energy.

People buy them because they're cute and smart, and then find out if Aussies don't have a job to do, they'll make one up. It might be chewing the couch cushions or digging holes in the yard. So I'm trying to emphasize to people to know their breed well, and pick based on behavioral traits and personality. Not looks.  Huh.   Just like we should go about picking our human companions!

I hope you enjoyed the pictures of Jackson in Action (<--see what I did there?) I saved my favorite for last.

He's smiling! Jackson is so gorgeous, and his mom and dad take amazing pictures. I highly recommend following him on Instagram because the hits just keep on coming.

So, where are your outdoor pics?  Don't feel like you have to live up to the standard set here!  No one can. lol. We still want to share your pet and hear your rescue stories too. Email me at pabibliophile@gmail.com

The Great Outdoors Photo Share: DayTwo

This is Riley. Riley's mom, Laurie, left Riley alone with his dad during this snowstorm. I will tell Riley's story in the captions below these pictures. You might want to read the blog first and then all the captions, or vice versa.

Spring is trying to spring in Pennsylvania. I know we have blog readers from all over the world, so I'm not sure what it's like where you are, but the past few days have been sunny and quite warm.  Believe me, you won't hear any complaints coming from me. However, in April in Pennsylvania, we are never more than a few days away from a 40 degree temperature swing.

Laurie's son-in-law was getting his Wings as a pilot in the US Navy, and she didn't want to miss the ceremony.

To that end, right in the middle of all this beautiful weather, I'm sharing some Great Outdoors pictures that are all about snow. We are sick of winter in these parts, but these pictures are too cute not to share.

Laurie decided, when the storm cancelled her flight, to drive from PA to Texas!

If you're a regular reader you know that everyone is invited to share their pets for photo shares. The pet does not have to be a rescue (or even a dog).

Riley and his dad, who had just had surgery, were left to manage on their own. Looks like they made the most of it!

It's a way to get all readers involved, so if you're reading this and you have some fun outdoor pics of your pet, it's not too late to share them with me!  You can see the various ways to share here, or you can email me at pabibliophile@gmail.com

Kami the cutie was featured on the blog last week. This is from her first snowstorm. Click here to read her blog story.

As always, we are looking for your rescue stories too!

The Great Outdoors, Day One

So, the pictures have been coming in for our Photo Share: The Great Outdoors.  As I expected, many of them are snow pictures.  So many of our pets are just little (or big) snow bunnies. Here's an example of one of the pictures:

That ^ is Riley.  Don't worry- he loves the snow.  Isn't he gorgeous?

So far we have some great submissions, but we are still expecting more. And. . . I didn't even share the cutest Riley picture yet. I'm saving it for next Wednesday! haha

What I had in mind for today is something I've been holding on to for a few weeks now. I'm going to share the rest of Lilly and Leroy's first play-date!  I wanted to include these pictures in their original post, but I had so many good pictures indoors (thanks Luke) I decided to put these aside for this feature.

  You remember Lilly right?

 And who could forget Leroy?

In these pictures we can definitely see the balance of power shift from Leroy:

He's getting ready to chase Lilly.
He's staring Lilly down.

Lilly is deciding whether to hold her ground.

Now they are having a stand-off.

And the power shifts to Lilly. . .

She stands up to him.

Leroy runs away in fear.  Ok he kind of just saunters away casually.

So, changing the subject a bit, it's time for the "boy is my face red" photo.  Weeks ago, Meredith shared this precious picture of her girl Nala sleeping on her dad Leroy's head. (Yes, her dad is named Leroy and the dog is named Leroy. It's a weird coincidence that I'm sharing them both on the same day.  Or is it?)

I forgot to include it with my sleeping pets photo shares. :-( How could I have forgotten this picture?  So sorry Meredith and Nala!

Ok, get your pets to go outside. Take some awesome pictures. Get some Vitamin D.  Get those pictures to me ASAP.  Also, don't forget we always want you to share your rescue stories!

Waldo Revisited

A few weeks ago a picture showed up in my Facebook newsfeed that inspired the latest Photo Share, The Great Outdoors.

This is Waldo. LOOK AT HIM. I am so in love with this dog it's ridiculous. We featured him on the blog back in December, and his story is so compelling. Please please go read about Waldo if you haven't yet. His story will make your day. I mean, have you LOOKED AT HIM!?!

Waldo was absolutely loving the snowstorm Missouri got back in February and Clare's neighbor Teri took some great pictures to show how at home he was.

Do I have something on my face?

Could you even imagine being victimized by the elements and looking up to see Waldo coming to your rescue?  If I lived near Clare I would spend my summer flailing around in a swimming pool just to get Waldo to save me. The picture below shows how heavily his responsibilities sit with him.

Luckily his toy giraffe brings him comfort. haha

To conclude today's post, Waldo is amazing. I want to meet him. I feel like I've known him forever and I could tell him all my secrets.  Wouldn't you love to see this at your door every day?

Go and read Waldo's original story if you haven't. Find some pictures of your pets outside and share them with us. Put together some details on your rescue story and share it with the blog. And follow us on social media. I'm very demanding today, aren't I?

Mika

Meet Mika. Take a minute to gaze into those eyes. She is simply stunning. This girl, this perfect, beautiful, red Husky is a rescue dog.  Still think you have to go through a breeder to get just the right full-bred dog?

Look at
her. Even she knows she's legit!

When Mika was a puppy, a woman saw her owner beating her in a parking lot. She asked the man why he was hitting her, and he said he had to because she was so bad. The woman asked if she could have her, and he said "Take her!"  Can you even imagine!?!

That's how Mika ended up in rescue with Operation Education Animal Rescue (Nashville, TN), and that's when Rachel and her family brought her home. They fell in love with the breed and began rescuing and fostering many more, eventually reaching out to other breeds as well. They spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinate on their own dime. Rachel does home visits and has the new owners sign contracts.  She also works with other volunteer organizations as well, donating time, money, food, transportation, anything at all to help.

Mika is the alpha female of Rachel's pack, and don't worry, we will share the whole pack on the blog in the future!  Rachel calls her "perfect."  She is good with kids and cats.  Look how well-behaved she is on a retractable leash with this young man.

She is easy to train and proud to show off her tricks for Rachel's guests. She also likes the snow, but fetch is her very favorite thing!

She is patient when her brother shoves his paws in her face.

She is a cuddlebug.

She seems like the pack leader even when she's totally chill.

Rachel has a beautiful family. Here's a little sneak peak at what you'll get the next time we check in with Rachel's pack.

Rachel is the former foster coordinator for Hogan's Husky Heroes, and volunteers with Alabama Siberian Husky Rescue, but we know she and her family are heroes for opening their hearts and home to Mika and her brothers and foster siblings. Thanks Rachel for sharing Mika's story!

Readers, if you haven't shared your story there's no time like the present!
