Addictions

In one of my favorite movies, Uncle Buck, Buck proudly tells his sister-in-law that he quit smoking cigarettes.  He then goes on to tell her his long-term goals. He says, "I'm on to cigars now. I'm on to a five-year plan. I eliminated cigarettes, then I go to cigars, then I go to pipes, then I go to chewing tobacco, then I'm on to that nicotine gum."

Wiley has addictions too, and toilet paper is a big problem. In fact, all tissue-like materials are an issue. Last winter I had a cold, and set a box of tissues on the back of the couch. I went to the kitchen, and when I returned Wiley was standing on the couch pulling out and eating one tissue at a time, unabashedly.

<------This is the face of addiction.

These are just a few snapshots of his escapades with paper products. As you can see, he is not the least bit contrite in these two pictures.

My husband and I have abandoned the notion of keeping the toilet paper on the toilet paper holder (is that the actual name of it? I'm drawing a blank here). We do our best to keep it out of Wiley's reach, but there are some days when he is just a step ahead of us. After all, while we are out working, he is home resting. That way he's up for any kind of challenge when we get home.

What are your dogs' addictions?  If you have pictures, share them by clicking on "SHARE YOUR RESCUE" above.

  1. LOL, Sophie has an addiction to my shoes- either she has the need to know where I've been or to hide them so I can't leave again. She doesn't chew them, just carries them around, swings them (they are just as big as she is) and lays with them. The other addiction I can't understand is used dryer sheets- she will carry them around, roll on them, lay on her back and paw at them, looking like she's part cat. My only theory is that she wants to make sure her fur is anti-static and fresh smelling?!?! Any interpretations would be greatly appreciated!

  2. Haha. Is there any way you can get Sophie to start folding the laundry or something? Maybe put it away? It seems like she's taken a natural liking to it.
