Bertie the Diplomatic Dog

A few weeks ago Wendy contacted me and asked me to share Bertie. Isn't he stunning?

Bertie had just crossed the Rainbow Bridge, and Wendy wanted to share all his wonderful attributes.

She and her family adopted this Jack Russell mix from an RSPCA in the United Kingdom, and all of Bertie's pictures featured here were taken in Scotland.

Bertie had quite the life!  He loved playing on the beach, even though he was afraid of the ocean.

He loved adventures and went with Wendy and her family on long mountain hikes and trails.

  

He even enjoyed the snow, and it's a good thing he did because look at all this snow!

  

Bertie was both "mischievous" and "very affectionate," to quote Wendy.  What a wonderful combination in a pet.  

Wendy chronicled some of Bertie's life in a blog called Diplomatic Dog.  You definitely need to check it out. Her photography is phenomenal and her subject is a doggie supermodel if ever there was one.  All of the pictures above link back to her blog; all you have to do is click on any image.

Bertie enjoyed life to the fullest, and he passed away quietly and without pain when his heart just stopped beating. Wendy's heart is too big to ignore other dogs in need of homes, and so although she knows there is no replacement for Bertie, she has found another dog in need. You can read about it on her blog.  

Wendy thank you so much for sharing your story with us and for sharing Bertie with the world. We hope you will keep us up to date as your household grows via another furbaby, and our thoughts and prayers are with you as you mourn Bertie's loss.  Still, just look at the beautiful life you gave him!

Jessy, Brindy, and Toto

See that cutie right up there?  That's Jessy.  Take a closer look.  Does she look at all familiar? She is a Cairn Terrier, a breed made really famous in 1939. 

 

 Yep, Toto was a Cairn Terrier.  Toto was also a female named Terry in real life, until her owner eventually changed her name to Toto as her fame spread.

Yesterday Hubs and I stopped at a small grocery store in a strip mall on the way home from visiting our mothers. Jessy was standing outside with her dad, Dave, and her sister Brindy, pictured below.

These girls were two of the friendliest dogs I've ever met. Their little butts were wagging at every passer-by, and I couldn't resist going to up meet them.

They both strained on their tandem leash to get closer to me, and I got a face full of kisses.

 Look at Jessy standing up to get closer to my face! Isn't she precious? Dave says as a puppy she was mostly gray/silver, but as she aged her coat got much darker.  Even her vet asked if she was the same dog!  BOL! (BOL means Bark Out Loud.)

Of course Brindy is a beautiful brindle color, and her ears are some of the cutest I've ever seen on a dog.

 

 If Yoda and Gizmo had a baby, the ears would look like this.

 Jessy complied with a request to sit pretty for a picture, but Brindy had too many fun distractions.

I'm not one to start conversations with strangers; I've always been shy in that regard. Dogs are game-changers though. They serve as an instant conversation-starter and through Jessy and Brindy I learned that Dave enjoys photography. These two girls are not rescues, but they are hometown dogs with a local dad so I decided to share anyway. After all. . . there's no place like home!

Mom of the Year. . . Cadbury?

Today is a day to recognize the contributions mothers make to our world. We all know mothers, and we have all seen mothering done right. Maybe it is our own mom, or maybe it is an example like sweet Cadbury here, the Mom of the Year according to the Washington Humane Society.

Cadbury was a stray roaming the streets with two puppies when she was brought into the shelter.  Sadly, it is not unusual for strays to be mothers.  However, as you can see in the pictures, Cadbury is likely quite a mixed breed, including terrier. The puppies, on the other hand, were BOXERs.  Huh?

As it turns out, Cadbury was also expecting her own litter, which she gave birth to the next day.  No one knows how Cadbury found these boxer puppies, but it is assumed her mothering instinct and her pregnancy caused her to lactate when she found the boxers, and continue to care for them right up until the point they could join their adopted siblings.

How about that.  Are any of us really surprised?  This dog had more instinct than some humans do to reach out and provide whatever care she could to babies who needed her. That makes her a perfect mom to all of those puppies, even the ones who kind of stood out.

What did you miss? 5/6/13-5/10/13

 

Allow me to bring you up to speed.  On Monday we shared Akira.  She is a mix between a Great Dane, which we all know, and a Bull Arab, a breed specific to Australia.  Either way she's a super sweetie. Freckles was our feature on Tuesday. He is a full-bred Cocker Spaniel who is an angel in Sylvia's life.  We continued to share reader-submitted photos on Wednesday in the Great Outdoors. On Thursday we branched out to a dog from the world of Instagram.  She is a beautiful Red Merle Aussie, and the main focus of Roxy's feature was how much of a dirty tomboy she is!  Feel-Good Friday was a quick pick me up about Kevin Spacey and the way he reached out to Boston after the bombings.

Feel-Good Friday: Boston

Today's post is very short and very sweet. Kevin Spacey, whom most of you have seen in a film at some point, reached out to Boston immediately after the bombing. He boarded a plane and went right to work visiting those most impacted by the terrible events. Ok, well, so did a lot of other people. So did a lot of dogs, like the Canine Comfort Dogs we featured a few weeks ago.

However, before Spacey went home, he made a stop at the North Shore Animal League, the world's largest no-kill animal shelter.  Oh boy.  I like where this is going.

He adopted this special puppy, and named her Boston!

Boston went home with Kevin and joined his family, which also includes an older mixed breed terrier named Mini. 

Thank you, Kevin Spacey, for bringing happiness to so many people and animals with such simple gestures.  Thank you for patronizing a no-kill shelter while simultaneously raising awareness of rescue dogs. If a mutt from a shelter is good enough for Kevin Spacey, it's good enough for anyone.

Mud Puppy

 This is Roxy. I met her on Instagram.  The first thing you need to know about Roxy is she is a looker. 

The next thing you need to know is she is a red merle Australian Shepherd, and Aussies LOVE to get dirty.

 No, seriously.  They enjoy filth and dirt.

 They love being outside. It's literally what they're bred for.

And snow is not the slightest bit daunting to these dogs. In fact it's probably their favorite thing, since they were also bred to withstand Colorado winters.

 Their coats even have their own defense mechanism.

 Here's Roxy using the dirtiest available snow to cool off. Her mom points out the funny butt in the air pose she assumed.  Roxy is a tease.

The Great Outdoors Photo Share: Day Six

Hey readers!  As some of you may know, we have been doing a Photo Share of pets in the Great Outdoors. This is a way for readers to share their pets even if they aren't rescues.
