Photo Share: Puppy Dog Eyes, 1

Today is our first day of the Puppy Dog Eyes Photo Share. For more information on how that works click here. I have gotten lots of submissions via Instagram and Facebook. These are just a few and there are plenty more to come so if you have any good pictures it's not too late to submit them.

This is Ilsa. She is patiently waiting for her mom, Regina, to finish riding the exercise bike so they can go outside and get some of Ilsa's type of exercise.

Onyx was just featured on the blog this week!  You can read her story right here.

Gina and Schyler have been generously sharing their house with lots of rescues, a few of whom we have already featured. We will keep those stories coming as they provide them, but in the meantime here are some great Puppy Dog Eyes from their pack.  The first one is Dakota.

This is Moo Latte.

Mr. Wilson is a new foster of Gina's.

And Isabella has some of the best Puppy Dog Eyes I've ever seen. She is pictured at the top of the page and below. How does Gina manage to say no to this face?

So those are just a few of the submissions we have received. Keep your pictures coming. Surely your dog makes some good puppy dog eyes!

Before we conclude, I'd like to welcome a friend of mine to the Dog Rescuer's Club. Janet just welcomed Dobby into her home. He had been at the Hillside SPCA since April, which is wayyy too long for a dog to be without a furever home.  Dobby loves four-legged creatures but is very frightened of the two-legged variety. It will take a lot of patience and time to teach Dobby that he is safe now.

Welcome aboard Janet. Once you rescue a pet you'll never be able to get one any other way. Take lots of pictures and keep us posted!

Readers, please email me at pabibliophile@gmail.com with your pets' stories and photos. Don't forget about our Photo Share as well!

Zeus

A few weeks ago we featured the story of a beautiful Doberman named Athena. I mentioned her terrible start in life in that post. She was found with another dog, Zeus, and they were in awful condition.

You can read about that here, but be forewarned that the story is very graphic and traumatic. After Alexa adopted Athena and finally heard about her horrific past, she set about trying to adopt Zeus too, but he still had a lot of rehabilitation ahead of him and was not available. In fact, poor Zeus only weighed 62 lbs when he was found, and he now weighs 103 lbs!  He still has scars from where his hip bones poked through.

As Alexa continued to look for a friend for Athena, different dog opportunities fell through. Eventually she called the rescue who had initially taken in Athena and Zeus and found out Zeus was now available for adoption! Zeus and Athena were able to be reunited!!

Zeus was very different from Athena from the moment he arrived in Alexa's house. Athena was very happy to see Zeus but he was very reserved, just taking in his surroundings. Zeus needed lots of training, but he eventually turned into a proper gentleman.

He is quite dog aggressive, but given his backstory that is no surprise. He loves to run around barking and burning his energy off, although he is a bit arthritic.

He looks intimidating with all his scars but around Alexa he likes to nudge her when it's time to be petted. He chews on his Kong and hangs out in his pool. In fact he's the one who taught Athena that swimming is fun!

Unfortunately for Alexa, Zeus does not currently live with her and Athena (and her new puppy Novak).  Zeus went to live with Alexa's ex-boyfriend for the time being, and while she knows he is loved and well cared for, and she can go visit him, she really misses him and hopes eventually Zeus and Athena can be reunited. We here at the Rescue Dog Blog will keep our fingers and paws crossed that everything works out best for Zeus and Athena.

Many thanks to Alexa for sharing the story and for taking a chance on a so-called dangerous breed. She gave two dogs a wonderful life after they started out with every odd stacked against them. Thank you Alexa.

Onyx

This is Onyx. Kathryn wanted to share Onyx after she read Wiley's Rescue Story. Like us, Kathryn and her boyfriend Kevin had very specific criteria when they went looking for a pet.

They went through the Ohio Italian Greyhound Club of America Rescue, looking for a male Italian Greyhound who was young, but not a puppy.

They wanted a pet who was good with other animals because they also have a rabbit. And finally, they were looking for a dog who was already house/crate trained. HAHAHAHA.

Gentle readers, we know all about Dog Destiny don't we? Maybe a better way to describe it would be to call upon the Rolling Stones. . . "You can't  always get what you want. . .but if you try sometimes, well you just might find, you get what you need."

So, despite Kathryn's list of criteria, she wound up with Onyx, a 6 1/2 year old female who is terrified of the bunny and the crate and only potties outside when the temperature is above 75 degrees.  BOL (bark out loud)! And Kathryn and her boyfriend absolutely adore her.

When they brought Onyx home on Memorial Day of this year she was shy. She had been living with a previous owner who loved and spoiled her very much, but unfortunately that owner developed a medical condition that would entail hospitalization and she had to surrender Onyx.

Anyway before too long Onyx warmed up to Kathryn and Kevin, and now she follows them all over the house, just waiting for them to glance at her so she can wag her little butt and give them her great big puppy dog eyes.

Kathryn says Onyx is "spoiled beyond belief and loved more than she knows," but I bet Onyx does know just how much Kathryn and Kevin love her, and I'd also bet that she loves them just as much or more in return.

Thanks so much for sharing Onyx's story, Kathryn!

Readers-get your stories in! The blog has been getting hundreds of views each day so I know we have a lot of people reading it. Now we just need them to keep submitting their stories. Also, don't forget about our photo share: Puppy Dog Eyes. If you have a good picture of your pet and its puppy dog eyes email me at pabibliophile@gmail.com.

Feel-Good Friday AND What did you miss?

First of all, I am sharing a link for a really sweet and accurate view into the mind of our dogs, via Casey Lomonaco and the Huffington Post, called "A Dog's Advice to Humans in Photos." It makes for a lovely Feel-Good Friday read. Click the picture below to go to the whole article.

Today the hubs and I are leaving for one last weekend summer getaway, to visit our dear friends in New York. Amy, whom we introduced you to in yesterday's post, will stay with Wiley and give him lots of love and affection.

I won't be writing any new posts over the weekend, but I hope that doesn't stop you from exploring the blog fully.

Having said that, if you haven't read the little backstory on Amy, you can read it on Thursday's blog post. However, a little backstory to Thursday's blog post can be found in Wiley's Rescue Story. His story has received hundreds of hits, and I am so humbled and encouraged by the supportive messages I've received since sharing it.  I put a permanent link to the story in the tabs at the top of the blog. If you like it, I hope you'll find it worth sharing with anyone who might relate.

Over the rest of the week I shared our traditional stories, including Part I of the story of the Minis. I'm not used to dogs having a cool nickname so I keep using it whenever possible. BOL. Tuesday was the story of Dakota, who is a part of a much bigger and very blessed pack who live with Gina and Schyler (and Derick).

ATTENTION: Wednesday we introduced our next Photo Share. . . PUPPY DOG EYES. Your pets have them and we want proof!   Get your pictures to me at pabibliophile@gmail.com.  All submissions are welcomed!

While I'm away take some time to explore the archives, especially if you're new to the blog. Bark at you soon!

Home Is Where The Dog Is

Today's blog is short on words and long on pictures. I struggled trying to come up with a name for the post, and as you can see, I went with "Home Is Where The Dog Is."

On the surface it may seem like this post is about redoing a room and how Wiley helped. In reality, it's about trying to heal sad hearts, and how Wiley helps.

Through a set of truly unfortunate experiences no fault of their own, Amy (above, left) and April (above, right) have found themselves without a real place to call home. I taught April a few years ago and Amy this past year. April is a student at Bloomsburg University and Amy will be attending Temple.

Wiley is thoroughly enjoying all the attention.
Although their situation is really not great, Chad, Wiley, and I have benefited by having Amy join our household for the past few weeks. April is here quite often as well, and it's been a really nice summer having these two lovely girls around.

While Amy was away at her orientation this past Sun-Tues, Chad and I decided to completely redo our guest room from being just the room where we put a spare bed and all our junk into a space a person might enjoy calling their own.  We wanted to surprise Amy when she got back, which meant we had to work really quickly to get everything done. There was hideous wall-to-wall carpeting to be ripped up and paneling to be painted. Below are the before and after pictures.

You can see the brown shag carpet on the left that was covering the beautiful original hardwood floors. The paneling was also very dull in color, and we replaced it with a buttery yellow.

Since Wiley hates/is afraid of anything new or different, this redo drove him nuts. He was constantly under our feet, rubbing up against the paint, and just generally being a nuisance.

In the first picture, he jumped on the box spring as soon as we removed the mattress to put a bed skirt on. In the second picture he knocked the old curtain off the wall and then laid on it. Finally, in picture three he is trying to get Chad to play with his ball while Chad is pulling carpet staples from the floor.

Eventually we had to call in our friend Luke for reinforcements, or we wouldn't have been able to finish in time to surprise Amy when she got here. Wiley was soooo mad when Luke came right in and got to work instead of fussing over him. He stood and/or sat behind Luke and barked or hit him with his paw the entire time.

Every time I tried to take photos he tried to insinuate himself into them. The only time I asked him to pose was with the girls. All the other pictures are ones he put himself in. Look at the pics below!  You can see him sneaking his head in to lay it on my leg while I'm snapping the shots.

I had a lot of fun redoing this room. It hasn't been touched since we moved in, and since Chad and I are hoping to adopt a baby sometime down the line we need it to look nice. Amy's presence has given us that extra motivation we were lacking, because we just want to see her get the happiness she deserves.

I was able to keep the total cost of the redo under $100 including the paint. New curtains, a new comforter, a new bedskirt, and even decorative pillows were all purchased at Ollie's Bargain outlet. And in case you're wondering, yes, those are Harry Potter sheets under there. In the picture on the left you can see the blue swirls with little Golden Snitches on them.

Wiley checked them out as well as I was trying to make the bed and he refused to get off.

And just in case you thought he was a total slacker, he helped us paint too.

Don't worry. No paint actually got in his eyeball. But his eyebrows, whiskers, and tail were a mess.

So to review, we started with a very dreary room, which is no place for a girl who needs to be cheered up.

And by the time we finished we had a pretty little place to call home, dog included free of charge.

Wiley is a lover. He wants to be the center of attention all the time, and people cannot help but feed off his loving vibes. Can't you feel at least a little happiness coming off of them in the picture below?

This is a win-win situation. Or as Michael Scott would call it, a win-win-win. Amy wins, Wiley wins, April wins.

And we win too. Wiley will really miss these girls when they go to college,  but we will too. On the one hand, Wiley will enjoy getting his spare bed back. . .

. . . on the other hand it could get a little too quiet around here.

I hope you enjoyed checking out my room remodel. I also hope the room change is indicative of a mood change in me, and an incentive to work on some happiness and fulfillment. Only time will tell.
All we can do is make the most of it now, and share our friendly guy with everyone who is in need of a little pick me up. It's cheap therapy with very few side effects. Mostly hair and slobber.
