Feel-Good Friday: Mutt Movers

Our Feel-Good Friday stories have focused on such a plethora of topics, from rescue dogs who literally rescued their owners to therapy dogs to funny animal friendships.  We have also featured various ways people can contribute to rescue efforts, and Martha's Mutt Movers is a great example of how even the simple things, the ones that nobody considers, make a huge difference and save lives.

I first learned of Martha's service through a special on The Today Show. You can read my original source here and see some video as well.

Martha arranges transportation for dogs moving from hill-kill shelters to safer situations. Sometimes it's to a foster home, a breed-specfic rescue group, or maybe a new furever family.  When I shared the story of Matt Hannon, a 7 year old cancer survivor, and his new rescue Jo Alice, she had been brought north by a pilot who participates in a similar program to Mutt Movers called Pilots N Paws.

Martha's service divides the trips into small increments, so different volunteers can each take a quick leg and make an overwhelming task into a manageable one! It's really an amazing idea and honestly saves so many lives!

It seems so simple and yet I'm not sure I ever would have thought of it.

This week has been a terrible week for the news. Well, let's be honest, it seems like they all are terrible news weeks that try to shatter our faith in humanity. Thanks, Martha, for putting so much time and energy into finding a way to get these dogs into an adoptable position and a chance at a great life. You've restored my faith a bit.

Readers, click on any of the above pictures to be taken to the Martha's Mutt Movers site where you can see all the dogs they have helped save and learn more about them. You can also see ways for you to help! Wiley already thinks he's ready to do his part.

Have a wonderful day, and make sure you follow your pets around all weekend getting pictures for our upcoming Photo Shares. The themes are Dynamic Duos, Fall, and Halloween. It's not a contest. All you have to do is submit your picture and we will use it. Email me at pabibliophile@gmail.com

  1. What a wonderful article! Thank you so much for spreading the word on rescue transport. People don't realize that just a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday can make a world of difference in the life of a shelter dog.

  3. As one of Martha's Mutt Movers, I can honestly say doing this gives me more satisfaction and enjoyment than just about anything in the world! You can feel the love with every dog and to watch a dog go from a cowering bundle of fear to a well loved family member ... there is no better feeling! Rock on Martha the world is a better place because of you!
